Simokattes, Theophylaktos
   The last of the Roman imperial historians. He wrote a history of the reign ofMaurice (q.v.), who ruled 582-602, continuing the work of Menander Protector (q.v.). He was a contemporary of the emperor Maurice, probably a judge, who was born in Egypt (q.v.). Incidental to his main theme, but of unusual interest is information aboutAsia, including the Turks (q.v.) of central Asia and the Chinese empire.
